Beautiful Bulgaria

Sozopol - Bulgaria's oldest coastal town

Dating from 610 BC (with experts believing a settlement to have existed on the same site as
early as the 12th century BC) this ancient town (once called 'Apollonia') was occupied by
the Thracians, Greeks, Romans and Byzantines. It was the first Greek colony on the Black Sea
- and there are still many Greek speakers here today. It's architecture and atmosphere
reflect the many cultures that have lived in this beautiful town over the years. The
Bulgarian National Revival period left its marks on the appearance of this unusual town,
such as some of the architecture still seen in the solid wooden houses.

Sozopol used to be the Bohemian retreat for Bulgarian intellectuals during Communist times.
You can still see traces of these days in the old town - the fishermen’s houses and the
Byzantine ruins. Today, Sozopol is a bustling port combining the 'olde worlde' charm of
times past and the modern vibrant Bulgaria with restaurants, pavement cafes, shops and
market stalls.

Local food includes delicous pastries and sweetmeats. The local tsatsa (small fried fish)
must be sampled.

There is an arts festival in Sozopol every September. The town becomes very busy and exhibitions fill the churches, courtyards & gardens and modern installations. There is a vast array of visual art, and jazz, classical music and ballet. There are various museums hosting wonderful jewellery, vases, amphorae and anchors.   Sozopol

You can take an organised boat trip down the coast, hire a traditional fishing boat or simply relax on the magnificent local sandy beaches.

There are two main beaches - one in front of the town gardens, in the centre of the resort, and another at the far end of the new town. The sand is fine and golden. There are some amazing views over the bay, south back over the sea and to the Standja mountains. The climate here, some 30km south of Bourgas and towards the Greek mainland, is less mild than the northern coast, and summers are hot and winters windy.

Grain, grapes (vineyards), apples, peaches, apricots and cherries orchards are the main agriculture in the region.
