With fantastic coastal resorts such as Sunny Beach, Golden Sands, Obzor and Nessebur to name a few, Bulgaria is an excellent choice of destination for a beach holiday. There are beautiful river mouths surrounded by forests and sandy beaches. Fantastic stretches of golden sand await you - and with over 200 miles of coastline, there's plenty to explore. |

The Black Sea is not tidal so you can relax on the beach all day without having to worry about moving your towel! The Black Sea is enclosed so actually gets warmer than the Mediterranean in summer. There are the usual water sports and scuba diving activities available at the major beaches. |

The main coastal cities are Varna and Bourgas (see towns) which are serviced by their own airports. Sunny Beach is between the 2 towns and is the most established Bulgarian coastal resort, with a blue flag 5 mile long beach and all the facilities including cocktail bars, clubs, mini-golf and water park. On the other hand, Duni, south of Bourgas, is a quiet, secluded holiday village ideal for a relaxing break. Obzor offers beautiful beaches and a multitude of water sports. See our hotels page for great deals on hotel rooms in Obzor. |

Alternatively, you could visit Nessebar, with it's ancient buildings of the 'old town' clinging to a rocky peninsula jutting into the calm sea. Back up the coast towards Varna, is the beautiful resort of Byala with it's golden white sands. North of the city are other coastal resorts such as Golden Sands, Albena and Balchik. These also offer fantastic beaches and the usual watersports, scuba diving and facilities. A large percentage of the Bulgarian coast is made up of sandy beaches, so wherever you are near the coast there's somewhere to swim or sunbathe nearby. Most of these resorts have now been established for some time and you will find all the usual restaurants and nightlife that you would expect of more popular European coastal resorts, and a good percentage of English speaking Bulgarians. Properties on the Bulgarian coast have dramatically risen in the last 5 years. Sunny Beach property has become especially attractive for investors. There are still some excellent property bargains slightly further inland or further north, towards the Dobrich area. See the map for the main coastal resorts. |

Bulgaria has an abundance of mountain ranges; the Stara Planina (Old Mountains) stretch hundreds of miles across the country from the capital Sofia and down towards the coast. The capital itself nests beneath the heights of Mount Vitosha, with the Rila mountains soaring into the sky less than an hours drive from the city. The Pirin mountains, home of the country's highest mountain (an impressive 2925 metres) are south of Rila in south west Bulgaria. Finally, the Rhodope range extends onwards from Rila and down towards the south and south east of the country (see map). Bulgaria offers some of the best skiing in Europe, at the traditional ski resorts of Bovorets and Pamporovo as well as the relatively new ski resort at Bansko. There are many other smaller places to ski throughout the country through, with skiing available at Vitosha, less than half an hour from the city centre. You will find the best ski resorts in the Rila and Rhodope ranges but there are other ski runs stretching across the country over the Stara Planina. There are many hiking routes too. Properties in the Bulgarian ski resorts have risen incredibly quickly in the last few years, but there are plenty of cheap properties within commuting distance, or around the smaller ski resorts. There are good valued propertes in the areas of Veliko Tarnovo and Gabrovo for example that are within reach of ski resorts in the Stara Planina ski pistes. The Bulgarian countryside is beautiful. Green, lush hill sides, thick with vine yards and cherry & peach orchids, dot the landscape, backdropped by stunning mountains or sparkling seas. Bulgaria ripples from plains to rolling hills, interlaced by rivers and ridges. Almost a third of Bulgaria is covered by forests (mainly conifers). Wildlife is in abundance. Littered throughout this wonderful landscape are multitudes of villages, some consisting of just a few houses, others the size of small towns. Many people in Bulgaria have moved out of the villages and into the larger towns in the last decade or so, which is why there is so much property available at such great prices in the country. Places of interest to visit include Monasteries, some built into rock sides. There are ancient ruins, caves, hot mineral springs, rivers and reservoirs, and excellent hiking opportunities. Other activities include biking trails, kayaking & canoeing, hunting - or even bungee jumping for the more adventurous! Property bargains can be found in the rural Bulgaria. You can find your ideal overseas property in rural Bulgarian for less money than a good second hand car in the UK! Further inland offers the best value for money, with houses in the county of Rousse average around 3 to 7 thousand euros. Rousse is not too close to the coast but the surrounding countryside is beautiful, and with soaring 40 degrees temperatures in summer and low labour costs, you could have your dream countyside property with an outdoor swimming pool and sundrenced BBQs. |

Bulgaria's towns may not be as large as some of Europe's other towns but they offer just as much to see. Sofia is a bustling, rapidly expanding city with a expectant air and a vibrant nightlife. Rousse, with it's rich history and historic Vienna style buildings, has excellent shopping and restaurants - the Rousse red wine is wonderful! Or why not visit Veliko Tarnovo, with it's magnificent fortress, and rustic houses clinging to the hillside above the river. Or see ancient Plovdiv, with it's seven hills, towns built upon towns through thousands of years. For more information on Bulgaria's towns, see the towns page. |
